![]() He's aching and empty? Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, do something constructive. Marty from Cleveland, OhNice melody and nice recording, but in my opinion the lyrics are pretentious and self-absorbed dreck sung by a spoiled kid. This is one of my favorites, along with American Tune. I love the drums on this song and the simple poetry of the lines such as. may be the only part of the song about disappointment - in not finding the desired dream destination - or may be just lamenting the fact that everyone is looking for America resulting in a gigantic traffic jam both real and metaphorical. I do agree that the comments on ".cars on the New Jersey Turnpike. The lines about "playing games with the faces." serve to convey the length of the journey rather than tedium or disappointment. I think this is a beautifully composed song about a journey that only covers a relatively small part of the States - Saginaw in Michigan to New Jersey via Pittsburgh - to convey its vastness - it took me 4 days to hitch-hike from Saginaw". I agree it is most probably not about Paul Simon moving to the USA from England as someone suggests. Faz from EnglandI think some people are trying to read too much into this song as with many others. The song is a metaphor for personal truth. Finding your own America is critical and if you don’t go out and find, it find your own America that stand for your own values and principles, you will be lost. ![]() Ask anyone 10 people what America is to them and you will get 10 answers. Mainstream media and social media influence everyone and force a personal value on what American should be. Hey, we were all confused at 18 but today it’s a very different time and one can get lost easily in social issues and cultural shifts in values and purpose. I particularly love the line “I’m 18 and aching and I don’t know why” This to me is the antithesis of what the Gen Y Gen Z generation is going through at this very moment. ![]() Our young people trying to find their own sense of America. This song represents a generation of today’s lost youth, maybe A little entitled, yes, but lost never the less. Mark from Chicago I think this song is a metaphor, wonderfully written and expertly crafted but most importantly this song is more relevant today than it was even in 1968.That makes this one of my favorite songs twice over! If I didn't already love Paul Simon he went ahead and lent his amazing tune to my favorite Prog Rock band and they really honored it. It happens at about 1:44 in and doesn't last long, but once you hear it you never once you hear it every time. If you listen hard during the intro, you can hear Chris Squire playing a bit of the melody from "America" from West Side Story on the bass. Rodgers from Melbourne, FlRegarding the version by YES. Saginaw Michigan in the 60's was a declining industrial city in the middle of rural NOWHERE and is even more deserted now that the automotive industry in Michigan is basically gone. Mary E from Sandusky MichiganHearing that they hitchhiked 4 days from Saginaw Michigan to Pittsburgh really blew my mind because I could not imagine Simon and Garfunkel BEING in Saginaw Michigan and more so that it was enough in Paul's mind to mention it in a song that has been heard all over the world.
